The Weekly

Marc Purcell, what is at the top of your mind this week?

ACFID, along with other peak bodies and sectors, is hosting two events at parliament on August 19th to commemorate World Humanitarian Day.

Vigil on parliament lawns, 8 am

This vigil will commemorate all humanitarian workers who have lost their lives on the frontlines in the last 12 months. All MPs will be invited, and there will be a number of speakers. This will be a public event, so please share the invite far and wide once you receive it.

Panel discussion and Gaza live update on Protecting frontline workers: Gaza and beyond, 6.30-8 pm

We are organising a live update from someone on the ground in Gaza, as well as a panel discussion representing multiple sectors, to discuss the importance of protecting our colleagues, both in Gaza and beyond. All parliamentarians and staff will be invited.

You will receive further information about this, but if you are planning on being in Canberra, please get in touch with Naomi at [email protected].

We encourage all those who are able to come along in solidarity with those in humanitarian crises everywhere. As further details are confirmed, we will provide more information.

To Note

To Note: First insights from ACFID’s 2nd State of the Sector report discussed at DSAA Conference

At the Development Studies Association of Australia (DSAA) Conference in Melbourne over 11-12th July, ACFID and Monash University presented some initial findings coming from the comprehensive data collected from ACFID members. Delegates had the opportunity to see some of the changes that have occurred in the sector since our 2018  State of the Sector (” SOS”)  report.

This initial sneak peek was intriguing, however the full report when finished will contain so much more useful insights into our changing sector. We thank our members for their generosity of time in completing the annual survey and encourage all of you to submit this year, in order for the 2nd SOS report to provide a complete picture of the incredible work done by Australian aid and development NGOs.

To Note

Call for Video Footage!

ACFID is seeking contributions from members and their partners of a range of video footage. We have a number of video projects in development at the moment, including for:

  • A video message celebrating 50 years of ANCP (will be produced by DFAT)
  • A video communicating the value of ACFID’s Code of Conduct
  • A series of videos sharing good practice in ACFID’s Code of Conduct Focus areas of Climate Action, Racial Justice and Locally Led Action
  • Short video messages to be played at ACFID Conference
  • Other short videos to promote the work of ACFID members (ie Humanitarian videos for our Instagram series: Field Insights)

How can you and your partners be involved?

1. Let us know if you already have:

  • Existing good quality video footage of your/your partners’ projects
  • Old or historic video or photos of your projects

 2. Let us know if you have staff or board members in Australia, or partner staff           overseas that would be willing to be videoed doing any of the following,

  • Reading a script to be used in the ANCP 50th Anniversary video
  • Sharing about the value of the ANCP Program
  • Sharing good practice on climate action or locally led action
  • Speaking about the benefits of partnering with an Australian NGO
  • Speaking about what Resilience and/or Solidarity means to them and their work

If your organisation may be able to be involved in either of these asks, contact Anne Fitzpatrick at [email protected] in the next week (before Friday, 2nd August) to register your interest and arrange a time to discuss your involvement further.

If companies fall short of meeting the Responsible Business Conduct Guidelines, be it through human rights or environmental abuses and more, complaints can be made and the AusNCP is responsible for facilitating solutions.

Where: ACFID House, 14 Napier Close, Deakin (Canberra)

Please join ACFID for afternoon tea to launch the new We are the Rainbow framework with Many Coloured Sky Executive Director, Ian Seal.

A friendly reminder that the 2024 ACFID Statistical Survey will close COB on 2nd August

ACFID’s Annual Statistical Survey is the only one of its kind in Australia, focusing exclusively on the country’s international aid and development sector. Our member organisations have been contributing to this survey for decades, and it plays a crucial role in advocating for and highlighting the vital work being undertaken in the sector.
To see one of the many ways that this data is visualised, check out our Interactive Aid Map

If you need assistance with completing the survey or have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected]

ACFID Perceptions Survey for  2023-24

ACFID will be sending out invitations to participate in our FY2023-24 Perceptions Survey over the next few days. Many thanks to everyone in advance who participates.

ACFID’s annual Perceptions Survey collects data on how our members (and external partners like DFAT) perceive the effectiveness of ACFID’s work in general, and on several specific pieces of work that have been undertaken throughout the year. It is a key tool for ACFID to measure our performance through the eyes of our external stakeholders and is used for both ACFID reporting purposes and also to improve the quality and effectiveness of our work.

We have shortened this survey in comparison to last year’s Perceptions Survey. However, we appreciate that completing the survey is an impost on your time and are grateful for your assistance.

Please contact: [email protected] if you would like additional information.
