The Weekly

Emily Moreton, what is at the top of your mind this week?

This week marked the 50th anniversary of the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP). In celebration of this milestone, ACFID joined Government and NGO leaders for a special event at Parliament House. Thanks to ACFID Board member and CEO of Oxfam Australia, Lyn Morgain, who shared some reflections on behalf of the NGO community, highlighting the impact and value that NGOs deliver for the Australian development program.

Other speakers included the Governor-General and former ACFID President, Her Excellency the Hon. Sam Mostyn AC, Foreign Minister Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, and Minister for International Development and the Pacific, the Hon. Pat Conroy MP. Read ACFID’s social media here and our media release here.

It was great to join with many members at the ANCP Reflections workshop held in Canberra this week. A key topic of conversation was the new DFAT Accreditation criteria that has just been released. ACFID welcomes the use of some ACFID Code of Conduct requirements in the new criteria and we will be working to update materials to help current and applying ANCP agencies to understand the relationship with the Code.

Finally, we are currently seeking expressions of interest for NGO representatives to the joint DFAT-NGO Committee for Development Cooperation. All ANCP agencies are encouraged to nominate staff to participate in this important Committee. Further information can be found here.

    Food for thought

What does Trump’s election victory mean for development? This is the question Development Intelligence Lab asked AP4D’s Melissa Conley Tyler, Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Kathryn Hendel Paik and Development Policy Centre’s Cameron Hill this week.

Acknowledging that “there are issues at stake”, Melissa suggests that the result is “not as consequential as we think… The reality is that life and lives in developing countries will continue to be hard, no matter the result of a US election.” “If Australia wants to be a real partner to the countries around us,” she says, “we need to understand the world from their point of view.”
Kathryn considers that while Trump’s transnationalism will “complicate development efforts in his second term” – particularly on climate – “it need not completely undercut them.”

Cameron notes that “To the extent that Donald Trump knows anything about foreign aid, he dislikes it… But except in cases where it might get his attention as part of a specific foreign policy transaction, he will mostly leave its day-to-day management to his subordinates.”
