From 29 March to 4 April, heavy rains caused flash floods and landslides in Timor-Leste. Eight municipalities were impacted, with the capital Dili and the surrounding low-lying areas worst affected.

A total of 25,709 households have been affected by the floods and there are currently over 8,800 displaced people in evacuation facilities across Dili.

While some people are returning to their homes, there is an ongoing need for food assistance, clean water, and non-food items for those affected, and for the ongoing delivery of essential services in affected communities.

ACFID members and their local partners are working with local authorities to respond to the needs of communities affected by the flooding.

Please find out more about the valuable efforts of our members and how you can contribute to their responses below.

You can be assured that your support to any member listed below will meet identified needs on the ground. The standards by which ACFID's members make appeals for donations are set by ACFID’s Code of Conduct. This includes a responsibility to provide clear information to their donors on the emergency and the work they are doing with affected communities.

All ACFID member appeals below have been checked and meet Code of Conduct requirements.

Donate Responsibly

Unrequested goods sent to disaster zones such as food, clothing, toys and building materials consistently end up in landfill. Unsolicited goods block valuable space at ports and airports and can prevent vital aid getting through. Cash is fast, flexible, and is used to meet the immediate and changing needs of those affected.

With cash donations goods can be sourced and purchased locally. This supports local businesses, keeps people in jobs, and stimulates the local economy.

If you want your donation to have a long-lasting impact, consider donating cash.  Find out more about how to donate responsibly at: https://donateresponsibly.org/

Action on Poverty

HIAM Health, which has been providing food and agriculture training for malnourished Timorese families for decades, was devastated by the floods over Easter. Their nutrition gardens, IT/office equipment, generators, water pumps, and vehicles were destroyed. With the disaster exacerbating existing water, food, and sanitation shortages, HIAM Health’s services are needed more than ever. Please join us and help HIAM Health rebuild so they can continue to serve their community. Your gifts can pay for emergency repairs and buy new equipment to help HIAM Health get on with their vital work.

Salesians Mission Australia

A major emergency relief facility, the Salesians’ Don Bosco Training Centre, Comoro is providing accommodation, food, water and supplies to more than 3500 displaced persons who have lost their homes and possessions.  The neighboring Sisters community is caring for the most vulnerable, elderly, disabled, pregnant women and infants whilst the Parish is distributing food parcels to those cut-off from access to supplies. Our urgent need is for food, water and supplies. Local Salesians are assisting those directly in need and require your support to help rebuild the community for months to come.

Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA

Our partner organisations in Timor Leste are women's, farmers' and workers' organisations who have been responding to Covid-19 and now the floods crisis. By making a generous donation you will support them in recovering from the impact of both the COVID and flood disasters with practical assistance to restore livelihoods impacted by the double crisis. Donations will ensure partner organisations are equipped with the resources they need to support members impacted by the crisis and assist them to sustain their successful movement-building and organising among workers, women and farmers.
