ACFID reacts to Foreign Minister’s comments at the Australian British Chamber of Commerce

14 Jun, 2018

CEO of the Australian Council for International Development, Marc Purcell, said:

“This is very significant. The Foreign Minister has unambiguously expressed the need to increase Australia’s aid budget. We know that the Foreign Minister is an advocate for aid, but this is an unequivocal public intervention. It is very welcome and a clear recognition of the value of Australian aid. The Foreign Minister’s appetite to increase aid now needs to be turned into concrete commitments and action by the Government.

“At less than 1% of Australia’s federal spending, our aid budget is at its lowest level in history. The successive cuts have been totally counterproductive for Australia, for our international partnerships and most importantly, they have failed the poorest people in our neighbourhood and around the world.”
