Global leaders in fight against COVID-fuelled crises to protect hard won development gains

28 Sep, 2021

Global leaders in international development will come together to discuss health, humanitarian and economic challenges and how they have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic at the Australian Council For International Development 2021 (ACFID) National Conference.
ACFID is the peak body for Australian non-government organisations involved in international development and humanitarian action.
The virtual conference, held on 29 and 30 September 2021, will focus on the need for locally-led development in the wake of the pandemic.
Notable speakers include Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General, Henry Puna, and United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Development Coordination, Robert Piper and Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Senator Zed Seselja.
Shadow Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Pat Conroy, and Greens’ Spokesperson for International Aid and Development, Senator Mehreen Faruqi, will also deliver speeches.
ACFID Chief Executive Officer Marc Purcell said: “The COVID-19 pandemic is the single greatest peacetime catastrophe since the end of the Second World War.
“It has left the world and our region at a crossroads. Hard won gains in health, economic development and sustainability are in reverse for the first time in decades. We can sit back or step up.
“We are seeing increased poverty, greater instability and more dangerous climate induced disasters. This calls for collaborative approaches that empower impacted communities.
“Our 2021 conference will bring global leaders together to discuss how we can work together to battle these crises and prevent conditions from deteriorating, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
“It will also highlight the importance of the Australian Government’s role in both responding to acute impacts of the pandemic and addressing the long-term root causes of insecurity and instability.”
