The Weekly
This week, the Australian Government released its 2025-2026 Federal Budget, signaling Australia’s continued commitment to our region despite global uncertainty. While the development budget reached a record AU$5.1 billion, it remains the lowest percentage of the Federal Budget in history.
ACFID shared a media release outlining the key budget changes, supported by an in-depth Federal Budget Analysis. We also held a Members’ Budget Briefing, where our Policy and Advocacy team unpacked the data and its implications.
On Monday ACFID will open nominations for CEOs who are interested in serving on the ACFID Board – we have 3 new vacancies in particular that we are keen to fill at a Special General Meeting in late May. Watch your inboxes for more information or send me an email if you want to discuss.
The ACFID Board has decided that ACFID will be hosting a leadership summit for all of our Members in June. This will be focused on the longer-term strategic implications for your agencies and the wider development and humanitarian ecosystem due to the big shifts happening this year (USAID, UK budget shifts, etc). We will have more details in next week’s newsletter.

AP4D Panel: Turbulence in diplomacy and trade: What does it mean for Australia?
This year is shaping as a potential inflection point in history. The actions of the second Trump Administration – which has imposed tariffs on allies, threatened to annex territory, and seemingly sided with Russia against Ukraine – are seen by many as signalling the end of the ‘rules-based international order’. To what extent is this correct, and what are the implications for Australia?
Join us on Thursday 10 April, 1:00-2:00pm (Canberra time) to hear from an expert panel on the current upheaval in trade and diplomacy, what it means for Australia’s interests and relationships in the world, and how the next government should navigate the turbulence.
Speakers include:
- Richard Maude, Distinguished Policy Fellow at Asia Society Australia
- Hayley Channer, Director of Economic Security at the United States Studies Centre
- Joel Nilon, Senior Pacific Fellow at the Pacific Security College
- Dr Fitriani, Senior Analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute
Who:Â Asia-Pacific Development, Diplomacy & Defence Dialogue (AP4D)
Date: Thursday 10 April
Time: 1:00-2:00pm (Canberra time)
