The Weekly

Marc Purcell, what is at the top of your mind this week?

This week, the ACFID Board met to discuss several key issues shaping the future of our organisation and sector. With the 2025 Federal Election approaching, we are focusing on how Australian aid can best respond to the global “polycrisis” while continuing to connect with relevant stakeholders and make a meaningful impact. We’ll be sharing more insights with you in the coming months.

The Board met with Richard Moore, former DFAT aid executive and co-founder of the Asia Pacific Development, Diplomacy and Defence Dialogue, to explore whether ‘aid is dead’. We also reviewed sector financials with Juliane Rose, Director of The Social Economy Group, to understand INGO and donor trends. The discussions held this week will help shape ACFID’s future directions as we embark on a new strategic plan in 2025.

We are only five weeks away from the ACFID National Conference, with a fantastic lineup of speakers already confirmed. (Reminder: Don’t forget to register!). If you’re interested in joining us as a speaker to discuss resilience, we’d love to hear from you—reach out!

AP4D Dialogue | Australia’s preparedness for regional stabilisation missions

Regional missions to Bougainville, Timor-Leste and Solomon Islands in recent decades are widely considered successful examples of stabilisation and peacekeeping operations. But how ready would Australia be to undertake something similar today? And what would that look like?

Join us for this interactive dialogue to explore Australia’s preparedness to undertake regional stabilisation activities. Facilitated discussion will focus on the types of contingencies that could require a response, Australia’s role and current capacity to do so, and ways to enhance preparedness. The recent announcement of a Pacific Islands Forum mission to New Caledonia makes this particularly topical.
