The Weekly

This week, following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, ACFID and our members quickly moved to respond. We were also pleased to see the contributions from DFAT to ANGO work. As part of that support, ACFID members involved in both the Emergency Action Alliance (which you can find alongside other member appeals here). and the Australian Humanitarian Partnership received funding.

The 2025 federal election date has been confirmed and the Safer World For All (SWFA) Campaign will continue throughout the election – calling on all political parties and candidates to commit to restoring Australia’s aid budget to 1% of federal spending. Read our media release here.

The last SWFA Electorate Forum is taking place tomorrow Saturday 5th in Brisbane, please encourage your supporters to attend! Find details here.

Mark your diary: ACFID will host a CEO summit on the 13th of June in Melbourne. This summit will be focused on analysing how the many disruptions facing the aid ecosystem will impact the future of your agency and of the whole the sector.  We will bring together some expert thought leaders to help paint a picture of the context and build in space for practical discussions.  There will be more info shared next week.

Planning is also well underway for ACFID’s Annual Conference, please mark your diaries for November 5–6 in Canberra. This year, we celebrate ACFID’s 60th anniversary, focusing on driving future transformations in a challenging landscape for development and humanitarian work. Stay tuned for weekly updates, and we’ll soon reach out to members for their valuable input. For now, save the date!

AP4D Panel: Turbulence in diplomacy and trade: What does it mean for Australia?

This year is shaping as a potential inflection point in history. The actions of the second Trump Administration – which has imposed tariffs on allies, threatened to annex territory, and seemingly sided with Russia against Ukraine – are seen by many as signalling the end of the ‘rules-based international order’. To what extent is this correct, and what are the implications for Australia?

Join us on Thursday 10 April, 1:00-2:00pm (Canberra time) to hear from an expert panel on the current upheaval in trade and diplomacy, what it means for Australia’s interests and relationships in the world, and how the next government should navigate the turbulence.

Speakers include:

  • Richard Maude, Distinguished Policy Fellow at Asia Society Australia
  • Hayley Channer, Director of Economic Security at the United States Studies Centre
  • Joel Nilon, Senior Pacific Fellow at the Pacific Security College
  • Dr Fitriani, Senior Analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute

Who: Asia-Pacific Development, Diplomacy & Defence Dialogue (AP4D)

Date: Thursday 10 April

  • Who benefits from intersectionality?
  • How do I personally benefit from intersectionality?
  • How do I apply intersectionality in my everyday work?

When:Tuesday, April 15

Food for thought

How are Western aid cuts impacting Southeast Asia?

AP4D’s Melissa Conley Tyler and Viet Dung Trinh write that the funding gap threatens regional stability and creates opportunities for China to expand its influence.

“The cuts to foreign assistance and dismantling of USAID tests whether other Western and democratic states can enhance cooperation while the global funding leader withdraws. Identifying at-risk projects and working together to maintain them is achievable, even if a coordinated response has not yet materialised. They will continue to be called on to do more.”
