On Friday the 28th of March, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) members are taking immediate steps to respond to the crisis.

Several ACFID members have teams in Myanmar who have started to work on response options – including work to get accurate initial assessments regarding the scale of damage and needs. Myanmar has been under military rule since 2021, with a protracted internal conflict ravaging the country following the coup of the democratically elected government.

There has been significant damage to infrastructure, and the death toll has risen to 1700 as on 31 March, with many missing and injured. Prior to the earthquake, Myanmar was already facing significant humanitarian challenges with 19.9 million people requiring humanitarian assistance. This included 6.3 million children and 15.2 million people who are food insecure. Humanitarian response in Myanmar has been severely impacted by the global shock to humanitarian funding in 2025, disrupting critical aid to many highly vulnerable populations.

ACFID’s members and local partners are on the ground and responding with life-saving humanitarian assistance, such as food, shelter, water, infrastructure, and health. Your donation will assist organisations in carrying out this crucial work.

Please find out more about the valuable efforts of our members and how you can contribute to their responses below.

We will continue to update this page with additional members appeals as they are launched.

You can be assured that your support to any member listed below will meet identified needs on the ground. The standards by which ACFID members make appeals for donations are set by ACFID’s Code of Conduct. This includes a responsibility to provide clear information to their donors on the emergency and the work they are doing with affected communities.

All ACFID member appeals below have been checked and meet Code of Conduct requirements. Find out more about the standards ACFID members adhere to.

Emergency Action Alliance

Emergency Action Alliance charities and their local partners are in Myanmar and in neighbouring countries providing food, water, shelter and medical assistance.
The Emergency Action Alliance (EAA) brings together 15 Australian not-for-profit organisations working in humanitarian response and preparedness, all of whom are ACFID members.

Through collaboration, partnership and recognising the unique strengths of each organisation, EAA can distribute donations quickly, at times when the rapid allocation of unrestricted funds to affected areas is critical for effective responses.

Anglican Relief and Development Fund Australia

The scope of disaster in Myanmar is huge across a wide area following the earthquake. We will be sending our emergency relief funds to support the Anglican Church in Myanmar to support their earthquake relief through the local churches embedded in their communities in great need. They are providing for those in urgent need of temporary shelter, food, water and medical supplies.

UNICEF Australia

On 28 March, a powerful 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar, followed by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake just two minutes later. The earthquake and aftershocks have caused widespread destruction, impacting Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Bago, and Shan regions.

Over 1,600 lives have been lost, and more than 3,400 people are injured. Homes, schools, hospitals, and essential infrastructure have been severely damaged, leaving entire communities cut off due to landslides and collapsed roads. Many are now without electricity or mobile connectivity, compounding the challenges they face.

UNICEF teams are on the ground, assessing the impact and preparing to respond with lifesaving supplies, including health kits, medical supplies, tents, and hygiene kits that include soap, sanitary pads, and disinfectants, for immediate delivery to children and families in desperate need.

We need your help to do more for children already enduring a dire humanitarian situation before the earthquake struck. Please donate today.

Good Neighbours Australia

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar on 28 March, 2025. The need is tremendous. While data remains incomplete the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has reported some 17.2m people are affected, of which 9.1m are severely affected.

Our 90-strong Good Neighbours Myanmar team has been operating in the country since 2006. They are on the ground undertaking Rapid Needs Assessments, from their base in Yangon. As at the 5 April, they have already distributed emergency food, water and mosquito nets, amongst 18 villages in Northeastern Myanmar and 17 villages in Central Myanmar.

They have put out an urgent call for support. If you give today, Good Neighbours Australia will ensure 100% of your donated funds reach our colleagues in Myanmar, for their immediate emergency response efforts. Once the immediate needs are addressed in the first phase, funds will be directed to rehabilitation programs in the second phase, including psychosocial support for children.

Donate Responsibly

Australians understand the impacts of humanitarian crises and are incredibly compassionate and generous. Unfortunately, if we are not smart in how we do that, we can actually cause more problems.

Unrequested goods such as food, clothing and medicines sent to countries experiencing crises consistently end up in landfill. Unrequested goods block valuable space at ports and airports and can prevent vital aid getting through. Cash is fast, flexible, and is used to meet the immediate and changing needs of those affected.

With cash donations goods can be sourced and purchased locally. This supports local businesses, keeps people in jobs, and stimulates the local economy.

If you want your donation to have a long-lasting impact, consider donating cash.
