About the Role

 

The Director – Finance, People & IT is a key leadership position in the organisation. Reporting to the Chief Executive (CE), the position leads on developing and implementing our financial strategy to deliver our mission and is responsible for the smooth functioning of operations within WaterAid Australia. The position plays a critical People Leadership role, and works with the Chief Executive, Senior Management Team and the Regional Leadership Team to champion and sustain the organisation’s culture and commitment to diversity. This includes playing an active role to drive a focus on systems improvements that allow for greater autonomy within country programs, as WaterAid seeks to maximise its locally-led development ambition.

 

More specifically, the position will be responsible for managing a small high performing team and will be accountable for the following areas:

  • Finance
  • Information Technology
  • People and Organisational Development
  • Company Secretarial Duties
  • Risk Management Systems
  • Policies and Procedures relating to the above areas

 

As a key executive, with experience in an INGO, you will work to deliver on our ambitions at WaterAid Australia and also contribute to WaterAid’s Global Strategy. Having oversight of the risk management systems, policies and procedures, you will also lead all compliance initiatives, provide advice and support to the Finance, Audit & Risk Management Committee and as a Company Secretary.

 

About you

 

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have senior management and organisational leadership experience, with an ability to inspire and motivate individuals and teams and sustain a thriving, collaborative culture. You have a proven track record of leading and managing high-performing teams, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

 

You will have had experience leading the finance, people and IT strategies that enable the organisation to effectively deliver on its mission. You have experience in managing an organisational budget and driving effective financial management.

 

You will have a high degree of competency working with international colleagues, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels. You will have a sound knowledge of good governance practice and risk management. You have demonstrated experience having oversight of compliance requirements ensure organisational adherence to legal and regulatory standards (including the accounting standards).

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Key Performance Areas/Accountabilities

Financial Strategy
·       Lead the implementation of our financial strategy with a focus on long term financial sustainability in service of our mission

·       In partnership with the Senior Management Team (SMT) deliver long-term vision for financial sustainability whilst adapting to external and internal changes

Management and Leadership
·       Lead and manage the Organisational Support and Systems Team and consultants in line with our values

·       Provide advice and contribute as a member of the Senior Management Team and as a senior manager in the organisation

·       Act as Chief Executive on a needs basis

·       Provide advice and contribute as a Global Finance Executive member

·       Provide advice and contribute as a Global People Executive Member

·       Manage the Finance, Audit and Risk Management (FARM) Committee of the Board under the direction of the Chief Executive

 

Finances
·       Oversee the Organisation Support and Systems team in order to ensure robust financial systems including:

  • International programs accounting systems and internal controls
  • Accounts payable and receivable
  • Year-end processes including audit and Annual Financial Statements
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Monthly financial reporting

People
·       Ensure compliance with the National Employment Standards and the SCHADS award

·       Manage the training and development of the People Managers

·       Responsible for the People and Organisational Development strategy to drive organisational culture, diversity, inclusion and performance

·       Represent WaterAid Australia as part of the Global People Executive

Information Technology
·       Responsible for IT strategy and management to provide effective and fit for purpose  IT systems and architecture

Company Secretarial Duties
·       Ensure that the company secretarial duties are fulfilled, and the organisation is compliant with ASIC and ACNC requirements.

Risk Management Systems
·       Ensure that the organisation has appropriate and fit for purpose risk management systems

Policies and Procedures
·         Ensure the organisation’s policy and procedure framework is fit for purpose and meets compliance requirements such as ACFID Code of Conduct, DFAT Accreditation and general best practice management principles.

 

 

Qualification, Skills & Attributes (Key Capabilities/Selection Criteria)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
·   Extensive experience in a senior financial managerial position with proven record of successes in the INGO sector

·   Experience driving high performing multidisciplinary teams

·   Demonstrated knowledge and experience driving compliance, risk and information technology deliverables

·   Proven experience of effectively working with board and audit committees

·   International governance and risk management experience, ideally within the International NGO environment

·   Ability to manage continuous improvement in a fast paced environment

Education
·   Relevant undergraduate qualifications and membership of the ICAA or CPA

·   Experience in SunSystems is highly desirable

·   Company Secretarial Training is desirable

·   Able to work effectively with diverse cultures and adapt personal style to get the best out of others and self

Physical Environment and Demands

Remote, flexible working arrangement with relevant equipment supplied as required, some overseas travel may apply.

Level of contact with children

During Country Program visits, office family days and volunteering activities.
