The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the peak body for Australia’s international development and humanitarian sector, is pleased to announce the appointment of Virginia Haussegger AM as its new President.

Virginia Haussegger is a respected journalist, gender equality advocate, and founder of the 50/50 by 2030 Foundation at the University of Canberra. She brings to ACFID a deep commitment to advancing gender equality, strengthening civil society, and promoting integrity and accountability in public life.

“ACFID’s work is critical to ensuring Australia plays a principled, effective and compassionate role in global development,” Ms Haussegger said. “I am honoured to join an organisation that stands for justice, equality, and solidarity, and to work with our members to advance a safer world for all.”

The appointment follows the completion of Susan Pascoe AM’s eight-year tenure as ACFID President. Under Ms Pascoe’s leadership, ACFID has navigated major global and sectoral challenges—from the COVID-19 pandemic to USAID funding cuts —while strengthening the organisation’s governance, Code of Conduct, and collective voice for civil society.

ACFID CEO Matthew Maury paid tribute to Ms Pascoe’s exceptional leadership and contribution.

“Susan has led with integrity, wisdom and generosity. Her steady guidance over the past eight years has helped ACFID grow in credibility, influence, and unity across our sector. We are deeply grateful for her service and the legacy she leaves.”

Of Ms Haussegger’s appointment, Mr Maury noted that,“Virginia joins ACFID at a pivotal time as we shape a new strategic plan that responds to growing global challenges. ACFID member NGOs and their local partners continue to make an outsized impact in 80 countries around the world – from PNG to Myanmar to Sudan – and Virigina will lead the Board as we support the sector. We are delighted to welcome her to the ACFID community,” Mr Maury said.

ACFID’s Board and members extend heartfelt thanks to Ms Pascoe for her dedication and leadership, and warmly welcome Ms Haussegger as she begins her term as President.
