ACFID urges protection of civilians and calls on Australian Government to stand firmly behind international law as conflict escalates in the Middle East

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) echoes the deep concerns being raised about the recent escalation of violence in the Middle East and the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation facing civilians.

In the last few days, intensified strikes, including the ongoing United States and Israeli strikes in Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks across the region, have resulted in significant civilian casualties. Schools, hospitals, airports, and other civilian sites have been damaged, and communities are facing renewed displacement as people flee the attacks.

“The humanitarian consequences of this escalation are devastating. Civilians, especially children, are paying the highest price,” said ACFID CEO Matthew Maury.

ACFID condemns all attacks on civilian infrastructure and is deeply concerned that without immediate de-escalation, the humanitarian situation will worsen further. Continued strikes on civilian areas are undermining the essential systems communities rely on for survival.

“At moments of heightened conflict and human suffering, Australia’s voice matters,” Maury said.

“We call on the Australian Government to stand firmly on the side of international law—upholding the protection of civilians, demanding accountability, and supporting a rules‑based order as the conflict in the Middle East escalates.”

ACFID calls for adherence to international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians. Without immediate de-escalation and an end to hostilities, civilians will continue to bear the brunt of this escalating crisis.

Australian NGOs and their partners are on the ground in the region working to deliver food, clean water, medical care and other essentials in the Middle East but needs far exceed available resources.

Australians who are able and willing to donate to address the growing humanitarian needs can visit the Emergency Action Alliance appeal page for more information about how and where to donate.
