ACFID welcomes $26 million in humanitarian assistance to Gaza, Myanmar, and Afghanistan

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) welcomes the Australian Government’s announcement of a further $11 million in humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza, and an additional $15 million in assistance to support people impacted by the crises in Myanmar and Afghanistan.

The humanitarian assistance for Myanmar and Bangladesh includes support for Rohingya refugees who have fled Myanmar, as well as lifesaving assistance to provide food, health, shelter, and protection for displaced persons on the Thai-Myanmar border.

The funding for Afghanistan includes an additional $5 million to support United Nations partners to deliver services for Afghan women and girls that address sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, and displacement.

This announcement comes at a critical time when the global donor environment is rapidly changing, and uncertainty is growing.

“ACFID welcomes the announcement of $26 million in humanitarian assistance for Gaza, Myanmar, and Afghanistan, it’s great to see Australia doing more to address the dire humanitarian need in these crises. This announcement signifies that in a world of uncertainty and overwhelm in the humanitarian system, Australia is willing to continue to support those most at risk.” said Naomi Brooks, ACFID’s Humanitarian Lead.

“In these uncertain times, Australia is building its credentials as a stable donor of choice, but more needs to be done. We continue to call for the Humanitarian Emergency Fund to be doubled to address the scale of need across the world, particularly with the gaps created in humanitarian funding by USAID cuts.” added Ms Brooks.
