ACFID welcomes the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire, urges Gaza must be next

Nov 27, 2024 | Media Releases

Humanitarian peak, ACFID welcomes the recent ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel but continues to urge for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, where the situation is more dire than ever.

The ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel is a vital development in reducing the ongoing human suffering and escalating tensions. Since October 2023, 3,670 people have been killed in Lebanon, with an estimated 1.3 million directly impacted and uprooted from their homes.

While the ceasefire offers hope for Lebanon, the wider region continues to face immense challenges, particularly in Gaza and the West Bank, where civilians continue to suffer from mass violence and displacement.

“We have been calling for a ceasefire for over a year now in Gaza, but the death toll continues to rise. There should never be a reality where we are looking at a death toll of over 44,000 civilians,” said Ms. Brooks. “As we support Lebanon’s recovery, we must also remember the people of Gaza, whose suffering continues. Protecting all people in the region must remain a priority.”

In Gaza alone, the health ministry has reported 16,456 children have been killed in the last year.

This conflict has had a devastating impact on Lebanon’s infrastructure, healthcare, and local communities. Lebanon is still suffering from an economic crisis that has gripped the country since 2019. The path to recovery will be slow.

“We urge the global community to rally together to support Lebanon’s recovery efforts” said Humanitarian Lead, Naomi Brooks.

“The Lebanese people have endured tremendous suffering, and now is the time for us to stand with them, to help rebuild their homes, schools, and hospitals, and to ensure that they have the resources they need to heal and move forward.”
