Australian aid peak welcomes funding for NGOs in the second phase of the Mekong – Australia Partnership

Sep 10, 2024 | Media Releases

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the peak body for Australian development agencies, has welcomed the funding and implementation for the second phase of the Mekong-Australia Partnership. This announcement of a second phase of funding by Foreign Minister Wong at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit set out a further $222.5 million over five years, available to non-government organisations delivering development programs throughout the Mekong subregion, which include Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Funding will help advance climate and economic resilience, gender equality, disability and social inclusion.

ACFID notes that the second phase of the Mekong Australia Partnership comes in addition to the recent civil society partnerships fund announcement. We applaud this approach to ensuring a diversity of NGOs and civil society actors are able to engage on Australia’s development program.

“We welcome the Government’s renewed commitment to working in close partnership with NGOs and civil society in the Mekong region and focus on ensuring local actors can access funds,” said Marc Purcell, ACFID’s Chief Executive Officer.

“A renewed injection of $222.5 million over five years is a significant and critical investment in development outcomes in the Mekong region,” said Mr Purcell.

In its 2023 inquiry into Supporting Democracy, the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (JSCFADT) recommended the establishment of a CSO Hub and proposed a baseline target for the percentage of Official Development Assistance (ODA) funds directed to and through CSOs. Despite the report’s acknowledgment of the crucial role CSOs play in delivering Australia’s humanitarian and development assistance, direct Government funding to these organisations has continued to decline.
