Humanitarian peak alarmed at attacks on last fully functional hospital in Northern Gaza, urges international action to return to ceasefire

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the peak body for humanitarian agencies condemns Israel’s missile attacks on the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, the last fully functional hospital in Northern Gaza.

The missile attack has resulted in hundreds of patients being evacuated without alternative access to medical care.

“ACFID is disturbed at the continued attacks on Gazan civilians, medics, and aid workers. Hospitals are protected under international humanitarian law. We should not be witnessing indiscriminate attacks on healthcare facilities,” said Naomi Brooks, ACFID’s Humanitarian Lead.

ACFID is deeply concerned by growing evidence of food insecurity in the Gaza Strip, as reports from Gaza’s Ministry of Health suggest that at least 60,000 children are at risk of health complications due to malnutrition. Earlier in April, Israel’s military cut off water supplies to the Gaza Strip, resulting in 65% of Gaza’s residents being unable to access the minimum of 6 litres per day of clean water for cooking and drinking, according to the Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO).

Meanwhile, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification continues raising the alarm at the hundreds of thousands of civilians facing famine-like conditions in Gaza.

“Israel has continually used food, water and humanitarian assistance as a weapon of war, leaving Gaza on the brink of widespread famine,”

“ACFID urges the Australian Government to use all diplomatic tools in pushing for a return to a ceasefire, and for the blockade on humanitarian assistance to be lifted immediately,” said Ms Brooks.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, 50,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7th 2023.
