On 24 June, successive earthquakes struck Venezuela, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. The larger quake was the largest recorded in the country since 1900. As of 26 June, more than 400 people have been confirmed dead and over 4,300 injured, with numbers expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.

The earthquakes have caused widespread destruction, damaging homes, health facilities, roads and other critical infrastructure. More than 30 aftershocks have followed the initial quakes, further destabilising structures and causing additional building collapses. Thousands of people have been displaced and are in urgent need of shelter, clean water, food, healthcare and protection.

The disaster has struck at a time when Venezuela was already facing significant humanitarian challenges. The United Nations Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan estimates that 7.9 million people will require humanitarian assistance in 2026, requiring US$606 million in funding. However, as of June, only 23.23 per cent of the appeal has been funded, leaving critical gaps in support for vulnerable communities.

ACFID members are responding to the crisis by providing emergency food, clean water, shelter and other essential relief supplies, while supporting affected communities as they begin the long process of recovery and rebuilding.
