ACFID search for new CEO

Sep 30, 2024 | Media Releases

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the peak body for international development and humanitarian charities, is set to appoint a new CEO to drive its mission for a just, equitable, and sustainable world. Current CEO Marc Purcell will conclude his 15-year tenure at the end of October.

The ACFID Board plans to announce an interim CEO shortly and will support the ACFID Secretariat throughout the transition. After an executive search is completed, a permanent CEO is expected to be appointed in 2025.

The new CEO will report to President Susan Pascoe AM and will be responsible for developing a strategic plan for 2025-30, collaborating with the Board, management, and ACFID members to establish a unified vision and purpose.

Outgoing CEO Marc Purcell expressed his gratitude for the ACFID team, especially for their shared leadership in advocacy for development, humanitarianism and human rights.

ACFID President Susan Pascoe AM commended Mr Purcell for his 15 years of diligent service, particularly his public voice on humanitarian issues.  She noted that ACFID is recognised globally for setting the NGO standard for development through its Code of Conduct.

“The work of ACFID and its members is more urgent than ever. The world is well short of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Humanitarian funding is not meeting the scale of needs of refugees and displaced people, and climate change threatens the existence of small island states and flood prone communities.  ACFID will be seeking a new CEO who is able to rise to the challenge of leveraging policy and advocacy for the world’s marginalised through the outstanding work of Australian Non-Government Organisations working in aid and development.”

Outgoing CEO Marc Purcell will be farewelled at the annual ACFID Conference at the University of New South Wales from 23 to 24 October.
