Australian International Aid and Humanitarian Sector Launches Consolidated Appeal for Lebanon

Oct 1, 2024 | Media Releases

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) has launched a consolidated appeal to support urgent humanitarian relief efforts in Lebanon, which is facing a severe increase in humanitarian needs following a surge in violent attacks across the country since mid-September 2024, particularly in Southern Lebanon and the surrounding areas of the capital, Beirut. There are immediate concerns for civilian safety with recent news of a ground invasion in Southern Lebanon.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, airstrikes have killed over 1,000 and have injured 6,000 people. Additionally, 1 million people have been displaced as of the 30th September 2024. Lebanon is already in the grip of a dire economic crisis, and with existing humanitarian need only set to continue to grow in the face of escalating conflict, the people of Lebanon urgently need relief.

“The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is dire, and agencies are struggling to meet growing humanitarian needs as the conflict shows no sign of slowing down. Urgent funding is needed to meet the most basic of needs,” said Humanitarian Advisor Naomi Brooks.

“The warring parties must ensure that all civilians, humanitarian staff, and facilities are protected from attacks, so crucial humanitarian work can be carried out free from interference,” said Ms. Brooks.

“We know how deep the ties in our communities run back to Lebanon, and how desperately Australians want to help. Donating cash is the fastest and most flexible way to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those who need it,” said Chief of Policy and Advocacy Jocelyn Condon.

“ACFID’s members and local partners are on the ground responding with life-saving humanitarian assistance, such as food, shelter, infrastructure, and health. Your donation will help organisations carry out this crucial work,” said Ms Condon

The aid sector is working to offer assistance and protection to affected people and communities and continues to call on all parties to find a peaceful resolution, uphold international law and protect civilians.

All ACFID member appeals listed have been checked and meet ACFID Code of Conduct requirements.

ACFID encourages Australians to donate to organisations via our  Consolidated Appeals Page which can be found here.
