ACFID welcomes $48m to tackle rising HIV in the Pacific

Nov 27, 2025 | Media Releases

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) welcomes today’s announcement by the Australian Government that it will invest $48 million to support Pacific governments in responding to rising HIV rates across the region.

The funding, which will go to HIV through technical assistance, disease surveillance, and co-investment in their national public health responses, comes at a time when health systems across the Pacific are managing increasing demand.

Cuts to global aid and health funding earlier this year have added to the pressures on HIV programs in the Pacific, with recent UNAIDS modelling suggesting that failure to restore prevention efforts affected by these cuts could result in an additional 3.3 million new HIV infections between 2025 and 2030.

“We have seen a deeply concerning spike in infections across the region. In Fiji, new HIV cases have increased tenfold over the past decade, and in June the Government of Papua New Guinea declared HIV a national crisis. This kind of action from the Australian Government is so important. This will save lives.” said ACFID CEO Matthew Maury.

According to the World Health Organization, someone in the Western Pacific Region acquires HIV every three minutes, with an estimated 164,000 new infections recorded in 2024.

“Pacific leaders have been clear about the growing pressures on their health systems, and this funding will help governments and communities strengthen their responses to HIV in ways that are grounded in local leadership and expertise,” said Mr Maury.

“ACFID members look forward to working with government, partners, and Pacific communities to ensure this investment delivers lasting impact on the ground,” Mr Maury concluded.
