ACFID welcomes Australia’s $50 million investment to strengthen disability rights across the Indo-Pacific

The Australian Council for International Development warmly welcomes the Australian Government’s announcement of a $50 million investment to advance disability rights and inclusion across the Indo-Pacific region, coinciding with the International Day of People with Disability.

The initiative will strengthen organisations led by people with disability, enabling their participation in decision-making at national, regional, and global levels. It will also foster collaboration and peer-to-peer learning, building a more resilient and connected disability rights movement.

“We commend the Government for prioritising disability equity and working in partnership with local organisations to make this vision a reality,” said ACFID CEO, Matthew Maury.

ACFID members have been active in delivering services such as addressing barriers to equity, healthcare, economic opportunities and expanding access to assistive technology for decades.

The UN estimates that 650 million people worldwide have a disability, with Asia and the Pacific being home to two-thirds of these people with disability.

“We welcome this investment in Australia’s partnership with three leading organisations of people with disabilities – the International Disability Alliance, Pacific Disability Forum, and ASEAN Disability Forum – which will ensure meaningful disability equity,” continued Mr Maury.

ACFID looks forward to collaborating with the Government and our members to ensure this investment delivers meaningful change for people with disabilities across the Indo-Pacific.
