ACFID welcomes additional $50 million in humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan

Jan 29, 2026 | Media Releases

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) welcomes today’s announcement by the Australian Government of an additional $50 million in humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan, bringing Australia’s total humanitarian support since 2021 to $310 million.

ACFID is pleased to see the Government’s continued focus on protecting women and girls, including prioritising food security, health services and support that upholds dignity, safety and rights.

Australian humanitarian agencies, working alongside UN partners and local organisations, play a vital role in delivering principled humanitarian assistance to people who need it most—particularly women and girls who are at the forefront of this crisis.

Quotes attributable to Matthew Maury, ACFID CEO:

“ACFID welcomes this additional funding which is urgently needed, as Afghanistan continues to face one of the world’s most severe and protracted humanitarian crises.”

“In Afghanistan, women and girls are facing systematic and worsening restrictions on their access to education, healthcare, employment and public life. Ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches them safely and directly remains essential.”

“Respect for humanitarian principles is not optional—it is fundamental to protecting civilians, safeguarding humanitarian workers, and ensuring aid is delivered effectively in complex and high‑risk contexts like Afghanistan.”

“As needs continue to outpace available resources, sustained and predictable humanitarian funding and humanitarian access will be crucial to preventing further loss of life.”
