ACFID welcomes the release of the Australian Government’s International Gender Equality Strategy

Feb 6, 2025 | Media Releases

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the peak body representing development and humanitarian agencies, has welcomed the Australian Government’s release of the International Gender Equality Strategy, announced yesterday at Parliament House.

At a time of growing global resistance to gender equality rights, the government’s commitment to advancing gender equality is both timely and essential.

“The release of the International Gender Equality Strategy signifies leadership from the Australian Government, particularly at a time where gender rights are under attack,” said ACFID’s Gender Policy Lead, Lisa Tadrosse.

“We welcome the commitments to sexual and reproductive health rights, highlighting the role Australia can play to address sexual and gender-based violence.

We are pleased to see climate change and gender equality recognised as interlinked crises. Climate change exacerbates existing gender inequalities by limiting women’s access to, and control over essential resources such as water, food, and education, while also hindering their economic empowerment.” continued Ms. Tadrosse.

“ACFID looks forward to future announcements on the tangible commitments and the implementation of this strategy. We also look forward to seeing the release of the LGBTQIA+ strategy to ensure inclusive and intersectional international development.

As the world faces increased climate disruption and conflict it is more important than ever that Australia takes action to advance gender equality,” Ms. Tadrosse concluded.
