Safer World for All joins with Sudanese community to draw attention to Sudan in Pre-Election Greenway Electorate Forum

Feb 22, 2025 | Media Releases

Ahead of the 2025 Federal Election, Safer World for All is joining with the Sudanese diaspora community in Greenway electorate, Western Sydney NSW, to place attention on the dire humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.

Minister Michelle Rowland will attend alongside candidate for the Australian Greens Palaniappan Subramanian to share their reflections on the conflict in Sudan, and share their party’s position on the Safer World for All campaign’s call for all parties to commit to 1% of the federal budget as Australian Aid, up from 0.68%. Liberal Party candidate, Rattan Virk, is unavailable to attend.

Sudan is one of the greatest humanitarian catastrophes of this generation. With 11 million people being displaced by conflict and some 30.4 million people – over two thirds of the total population – in need of assistance.

Quotes attributable to Elijah Buol OAM, CEO of Act for Peace, on behalf of the Safer World for All campaign:

“This election, Safer World for All is calling on all candidates to commit to an Australian Aid budget of 1% of the federal budget.

“Sudan is in desperate need of further humanitarian assistance. We join with the Sudanese diaspora today in Greenway to remind candidates that they can and should be committing more to the humanitarian response in Sudan.

“Australia can do more to assist in emergency response. Despite increasng humanitarian needs across the world, Australia’s Humanitarian Emergency Fund has not increased since 2018. We are not meeting our fair share as a generous and wealthy nation.

“1% of the federal budget is a moderate increase, but will make a huge difference to the people of Sudan, and others in conflict areas across the world.”

Quotes attributable to Amad Mohamed, on behalf of the Sudanese Community:

“The Sudanese Australian community is watching as Sudan continues to be one of the largest humanitarian crises of this generation. We are joining with Safer World for All to call on Australian political parties and candidates to do more for the Sudanese people.

“Our families and friends in Sudan are fearful for their lives, where they will get their next meal, the survival of their loved ones. The international community must step in to stop this continued pain and suffering, and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid and place pressure on parties of the conflict to commit to a ceasefire.

“As a community, we have seen the impacts of Australian aid, and the very real impact of aid not being enough. We are calling on candidates to support an increase to Australia’s aid budget.”
