Humanitarian peak calls for unrestricted aid in Gaza

Mar 3, 2025 | Media Releases

The Australian Council for International Development, (ACFID) the peak body for development and humanitarian agencies, is urging the Australian Government to use all diplomatic measures to achieve an end to hostilities in Gaza as the ceasefire standoff escalates.

The second phase of the ceasefire deal has now been delayed, bringing the proposed increase in aid to a halt. The Israeli Government is now blocking all humanitarian assistance from entering Gaza.

“This ceasefire was a critical step. It’s devastating to see the progress come to a halt. After more than a year of unrelenting violence medical supplies, food and water have been blocked once again. Humanitarian assistance is not a weapon of war,” said Naomi Brooks, ACFID’s Humanitarian Lead.

“ACFID continues to reiterate that all states, including Australia have an obligation to prevent breaches of international law including the denial of humanitarian assistance in Gaza and starvation as a weapon of war,” continued Ms. Brooks.

“ACFID continues to sound the alarm at the widespread humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Australia and the international community must address the widespread devastation in Gaza & the West Bank, and the Australian Government must speak out against the purposeful denial of humanitarian assistance,” concluded Ms Brooks.

ACFID welcomes the release of all Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees during the first phase of the ceasefire.

Since October 7th 2023 at least  48,348  Palestinians and 1200 Israelis have been killed according to OCHA.
