UN Commission concludes that genocide is being committed in Gaza

Sep 17, 2025 | Media Releases

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) is calling for urgent intervention after the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The Commission’s report provides a detailed account of systematic violations of international humanitarian and human rights law that may constitute the crime of genocide.

“The international community cannot look away. This report found intentional targeting of civilians, the deliberate starvation of a population, and statements from Israeli leaders that clearly point to genocidal intent,” said Matthew Maury, CEO of ACFID.

Humanitarian organisations, including ACFID members, are struggling to operate amid attacks on aid convoys, health workers, and UN facilities. What we are witnessing in Gaza is a catastrophe. It is man-made and entirely preventable,” continued Mr Maury.

Since October 7, 2022, around 65,000 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 20,000 children. The humanitarian sector faces conditions under bombardment and blockade.

Under the Genocide Convention, Australia and all States have obligations to take all possible actions to ensure such crimes are neither committed nor allowed to continue.

ACFID continues to issue calls for an immediate ceasefire and scaled-up principled humanitarian assistance, the end of the blockade, and for the immediate and unconditional release of Israeli hostages and arbitrarily detained Palestinians.
