ACFID welcomes Australia’s $266 million investment in the Global Fund

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) welcomes the Australian Government’s $266 million investment over three years in the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

The Global Fund has played a critical role in the development and delivery of treatment of diseases, especially in the Pacific and Southeast Asia, helping to ensure our region’s needs are prioritised.

“This commitment will help save lives and strengthen health systems at a time when global health is under immense pressure,” said ACFID CEO, Matthew Maury.

Australia’s funding to support global efforts to tackle the spread of these diseases comes at a critical time, with global health cuts, such as those from USAID, devastating health programs this year.

“Cuts to aid budgets across the world have had a devastating effect on global health and the fight to eliminate and treat preventable diseases. This announcement is welcome, and governments can and must do more to fill the gaps left by other donors,” continued Mr Maury.

ACFID urges governments to continue increasing support for global health initiatives, reinforcing Australia’s leadership in building a healthier and more secure Indo-Pacific region.
