ACFID Statement on the suspension of U.S. foreign aid

Feb 3, 2025 | Media Releases

The 90-day suspension of U.S. foreign aid is having immediate consequences for vulnerable communities across the globe, interrupting critical aid work such as health, education, and access to clean water. Tens of millions of people are severely impacted by this action.

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) is deeply concerned about the impact of this suspension on USAID programs. These actions will work against efforts to build peace, safety, and economic stability for the world.

From Syria to Vanuatu, Myanmar to Mozambique, across our region and around the world, national governments, local communities, faith groups, and civil society organisations are seeing the immediate dire impacts for their communities and there is a global chorus of deep concerns. Vaccination programs have been stopped, essential medicine is no longer available for the sick, schools have been closed, peace building work has been frozen, and people in refugee camps have been left without essential services.

With the world facing complex global issues in 2025 – conflict, economic challenges, food insecurity, climate change impacts, health concerns and pandemics – solutions cannot be found in isolationist policies or by building bigger walls. Every nation should do their part towards working collectively to tackle these global challenges.

With an Australian election on the horizon, now is a great time to speak up for a Safer World for All (saferworld.org.au) – calling all sides of government to commit to building a safer, peaceful and secure world for all.
