Urgent Appeal: Protect Civilians and Support Humanitarian Action in the Middle East

The escalation of violence across the Middle East that began in February has created a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis. Communities across Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and the West Bank are now facing rapidly escalating humanitarian needs, with the latest violence compounding existing vulnerabilities. More than a million people have been forcibly displaced, essential infrastructure has come under attack, and families are struggling to access food, clean water, medical care and safe shelter.

Women, men and children continue to be caught in the crossfire. Strikes on civilian areas, including schools, hospitals and residential neighborhoods, are causing immense suffering and placing extraordinary pressure on humanitarian responders already stretched beyond capacity.

ACFID and our member organisations reaffirm our commitment to the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. We condemn all attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. Without urgent de-escalation, the humanitarian consequences will continue to grow, with devastating impact on millions of lives.

ACFID member agencies and their local partners are on the ground responding, but additional resources are needed immediately to address escalating needs.

As this crisis deepens, coordinated humanitarian action is more critical than ever. We encourage Australians to stand with communities affected by this emergency and support trusted humanitarian organisations working to save lives across the region.

Emergency Action Alliance logo

The Emergency Action Alliance (EAA) brings together 15 Australian not-for-profit organisations working in humanitarian response and preparedness, all of whom are ACFID members.

Through collaboration, partnership and recognising the unique strengths of each organisation, EAA can distribute donations quickly, at times when the rapid allocation of unrestricted funds to affected areas is critical for effective responses.

Anglicans in Development

Funds will go to Al Ahli Hospital, a hospital in Gaza that is run by the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem. Al Ahli will use the funds to provide emergency medical services to civilians who have been injured in the recent escalation of violence.  As the Gaza conflict spills over to the West Bank, with supply chain disruptions and restrictions on movement leading to widespread job losses and increasing poverty, AID in December 2023 decided to allocate a portion of its Gaza funds to address needs in the West Bank

World Vision Australia

Escalating violence across the Middle East is putting millions of children’s lives at risk. Nearly half of all children in the region – 110 million out of 200 million – live in countries affected by conflict. Families aren’t sure whether their homes, schools and loved ones will remain safe. We’re calling on Australians to help us reach those whose lives have been shattered by the ongoing crisis. With your help, we can support over 800,000 displaced families and children across the region. Already, World Vision has reached more than 130,000 people in Lebanon with blankets, hot meals, family hygiene kits and other vital supplies. But as thousands of people continue to flee their homes, even more help will be needed.

As we continue to ramp up our emergency response, we’re asking you to join us here.

Donate Responsibly

Australians understand the impacts of natural disaster and are incredibly compassionate and generous. Unfortunately, if we are not smart in how we do that, we can actually cause more problems for the people of Sudan.

Unrequested goods such as food, clothing and medicines sent to countries experiencing crises consistently end up in landfill. Unrequested goods block valuable space at ports and airports and can prevent vital aid getting through. Cash is fast, flexible, and is used to meet the immediate and changing needs of those affected.

With cash donations goods can be sourced and purchased locally. This supports local businesses, keeps people in jobs, and stimulates the local economy.

If you want your donation to have a long-lasting impact, consider donating cash.
